Archival History & Lucas Museum Provenance

Painted in 1970 for the Doubleday Science Fiction Book Club edition of Edgar Rice Burroughs' A Princess of Mars, this seminal oil painting defines the visual mythology of Barsoom, featuring John Carter, Princess Dejah Thoris, and Woola the Martian calot. Selected by George Lucas for the museum’s inaugural catalog, the original painting is prominently showcased in the dedicated Frank Frazetta gallery at the Lucas Museum of Narrative Art in Los Angeles.
